Carl Ledbetter

However, we cannot close this final chapter without at least mentioning Carl Ledbetter, who has given so much time attending to matters necessary to maintaining the church building and equipment that some may have the false idea that he was on the payroll!  But Mr. Ledbetter's greatest service has been to the young people of the church for whom he would do most anything, even to driving a bus for them.  He was a wonderful song leader, and he once said, "Intermediates have long been my 'first love'."

Mr. and Mrs. Ledbetter lost their only child, Mary Alice, shortly before polio vaccine became available.

When Carl was needed, he would be there with the youth....

Baptists To Hear Rep. Hays

Oklahoma City, (AP) -- About 6,000 laymen attending the national conference of Southern Baptist Men will end their three-day meeting here tonight.
Rep. Brooks Hays (D-Ark.), middle-man in the conference between Gov. Orval Faubus of Arkansas and President Eisenhower over the Little Rock integration situation, is on the program for an address. Hays is president of the Southern Baptist Convention.
Five laymen told delegates how they "witness for the Lord" on their jobs.
Carl Lee Ledbetter, Little Rock, Ark., told how he became a "missionary for the Lord" at the same time he was a business agent for a labor union.
"Three times while I was business agent, my life was threatened by one of our members who was not a Christian..." Ledbetter said. "At the beginning and ending of each day I always prayed because I could see God in action in the union and in management.
"I am glad to tell you that men who were once ditch diggers for Satan are now road builders for Christ in the union and in management."
Other laymen on the panel were Gov. Price Daniel of Texas; Dr. R. L. Sanders, a Memphis, Tenn., physician; J. Ollie Edmunds, president of Stetson University, Deland, Fla., and Robert Stagner, Memphis accountant and attorney.
The main address tonight will be by Dr. Theodore F. Adams, president of Baptist World Alliance and pastor of the First Baptist Church, Richmond, Va.
